A good pump is more important than you might think.

When your body experiences stress (whether it's from an uncomfortable position, a noisy pump, or simply feeling rushed), the stress hormone cortisol rises. Your body essentially thinks, "There's a tiger nearby; this isn't a good time to nurse." The result? Milk flow struggles or even stops temporarily.

On the other hand, if you feel relaxed and comfortable, oxytocin , the hormone that helps milk flow, is released. Your body then feels safe enough to nurse, even when it's not strictly necessary at that moment.

The more comfortable you feel, the better pumping will go.

What types of pumps are there?

Choosing a pump depends on your living and working situation. There are several options:

  1. Engine outside the shell:

In these models, the motor is separate and is connected to the collection cups in your bra via thin tubes.

Advantages:

  • Stronger suction: The motor can be larger and work more efficiently.

  • Lighter on the breast: the cup itself is much less heavy.

  • Often quieter: the engine hangs loose (often on trousers or bag).

  • Larger capacity: some also have double pumps with good output.

Disadvantages:

  • Not 100% wireless: there are hoses running to the motor.

  • Carrying an extra part: you have to clip the engine somewhere or put it down.

Option: I think the Elvie Stride is a good option. The Elvie Stride has a rechargeable battery, is quiet, lightweight and powerful, and offers good value for money.

  1. Engine in the shell:

With these pumps, the motor is located directly in the breast shell.

Advantages:

  • Completely wireless: you don't have to worry about anything hanging around you or being clipped to your pants.

  • Pump without noticing: fits in your bra, ideal when you're on the go or at work.

  • Easy to carry: all-in-one system, no loose hoses or motor.

Disadvantages:

  • Heavier on the chest: can feel a bit tight during longer sessions.

  • Smaller motor = less suction power: sometimes slightly less efficient than larger motors.

  • A little more noise (with some brands).

Smaller reservoir: often max. 120–150 ml per breast.

Option: The Elvie pump is the quietest double electric pump and is completely discreet because it consists of two separate pumps. You can usually pump about 5 to 6 times before it needs to be recharged.

Vulpes Goods offers two portable pumps that fit inside your bra. This pump is less powerful, larger, and heavier, and can be heard louder, which can affect discretion. However, it is considerably less expensive than the Elvie. For those looking for an affordable option, these pumps could be a suitable choice.

Pumping at work

Pumping at work requires good preparation:

  • An electric pump with a pumping bra or power cord is effective, but requires exposing the upper body, which can be uncomfortable.

  • An in-bra pump is more discreet, depending on the style. Smaller, rounder models are less noticeable than larger ones.

  • Noise level : Some pumps make more noise than others, which can be disturbing in a work environment and for yourself.

  • Pumping room at work : A separate pumping room offers more privacy and comfort than a shared space.

Second hand or a new pump?

A used pump can save money, but hygiene and functionality are important considerations:

  • Always buy new attachments and bottles to prevent cross-contamination and virus transmission.

  • Check the condition of the stock and make sure all parts are functioning properly.

  • Health insurance coverage : Some insurers will reimburse part of the purchase price of a breast pump, which can make a new pump more financially attractive. Check your policy conditions.

Conclusion

A well-chosen pump makes a huge difference in your breastfeeding journey. Choose a model that suits your lifestyle and work or home situation.
